Unstoppable off road, livable on road. introductionfew vehicles are better off road than a jeep wrangler the wrangler is an icon and it can deliver inimitable fun. the wrangler was redesigned for the 2007 model year. It's much more comfortable and convenient, offering more cargo and back-seat passenger space. after its 2007 redesign, the wrangler gets only minor changes for 2008. It adds the sunrider top; yes essentials cloth upholstery; height-adjustable driver's seat; air conditioning; cruise control; fog lamps; 368-watt infinity sound system with six speakers and subwoofer; leather-wrapped steering wheel; tow hooks; fog lamps; compass; outside temperature indicator; body-colored fender flares; tubular side steps; heavy-duty suspension; tinted windows; and p255/70r18 goodyear wrangler all-terrain tires on aluminum wheels. options include many of the x options, plus options jeep's mygig multimedia infotainment system with 20-gigabyte hard drive and navigation system 1,275) and remote engine starting 185). the rubicon 27,220) is the model for serious off-roading. The current jeep wrangler two-door is a lot roomier inside than pre-2007 models, thanks to its increased width. The comfortable high-back front seats, using a handsome stain-resistant gray or khaki-colored fabric in the sahara and rubicon, offer 5. 1 inches more shoulder room and 4. 6 inches more hip room than previous-generation models. The removable rear seat provides 3. 9 inches more shoulder room, 1. 6 inches more hip room and 1 inch more leg room for each of the two passengers. Jeep claims that's more cargo space than the toyota fj cruiser, hummer h3, or nissan xterra offer. The headrests flip back, so they don't need to be removed, making it easy to switch between cargo and back-seat passenger modes. That huge difference is because in the regular wrangler, the rear passengers sit directly over the axle and between the wheel wells; in the unlimited, the axle is located behind them. The instruments, including the optional compass and temperature gauges, are easy to read, and the controls are soothingly simple. The solid square buttons look good and are easy to understand and operate. The materials are made of sturdy plastic that works well in the utilitarian wrangler. the 368-watt infinity sound system comes with seven speakers, including a subwoofer. That's a lot of speakers for a jeep, but we think this is a good thing. It comes with sirius satellite radio, good for keeping up with the news when out in the boonies. Located under the sound system controls are big climate control knobs, with buttons for available power windows above that. jeep's mygig multimedia infotainment system comes with a 6. 5-inch touch screen, a 20-gigabyte hard drive and a navigation system with voice control and real-time traffic information. The hard drive holds songs, pictures and navigation map information. Cds can be ripped right to the hard drive, and songs and pictures can be transferred via a usb port. A gracenotes database sorts songs by artist, track and song title. The locking glove box is pretty big and there's a convenient grab handle above it. This is a jeep, after all, so the grab handle will be used in the bouncy bits. the modular freedom top for the unlimited features sections above each passenger that easily lift off after twisting a fastener. It's the pentastar v6, new last year to chrysler, named one of ward's 10 best engines for 2011. The new engine makes considerably more power with slightly better fuel mileage, an epa-estimated 17 city/21 highway mpg. It's smaller, lighter, and more advanced than the engine it replaces. a smooth new 5-speed automatic transmission for 2012 replaces last year's inadequate 4-speed. The transmission is well behaved and doesn't hunt for gears. It was designed for use with chrysler's 5. 7-liter hemi engine, so it maintains jeep-like industrial strength. The pentastar block was designed to have accessories bolted to it, to reduce vibration. This pays off with a smooth and silent interior, even at 80 mph in the hardtop wrangler. The wrangler unlimited corners well. The wrangler unlimited is built on a wheelbase that's 21 inches longer than that of the regular wrangler. the soft top that comes standard slides and folds horizontally on the roof, leaving the occupants further protected by door and window frames, although there's already a rollbar. The available removable hardtop comes off in 3 pieces, like t-tops and a sunroof over the rear seat. It's a challenge to tune the radio by touch-screen in a bouncing jeep. even with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the wrangler has to work hard on two-lanes.
